A tragic incident occurred near Lixnaw in north Kerry on Saturday evening when a one-year-old baby girl was seriously injured by a restricted breed dog, believed to be an XL bully. The child is currently receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital while the dog involved has been humanely destroyed.

This harrowing event has prompted a garda investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack. In response to recent dog attacks, the Government has announced a ban on XL bully dogs, set to take effect from October onwards.

This ban will prevent breeding, re-homing, re-selling, and importing of XL bullys, with a complete prohibition on owning these dogs without a certificate of exemption coming into force in February next year. These regulations align Ireland with Britain and Northern Ireland in a unified effort to prevent further tragedies like this one.
