In a tragic incident, a baby girl was viciously attacked by a restricted breed dog, suspected to be an XL bully, in Co Kerry. The horrifying incident occurred near Lixnaw in north Kerry, leaving the child, believed to be around a year old, with serious injuries. She is currently undergoing treatment at Cork University Hospital, while the dog responsible has been euthanized.
An investigation by the Gardaí is underway, following recent Government measures to ban XL bully dogs, starting this October. The ban aims to prohibit breeding, re-homing, re-selling, and importing of these dogs with a complete ban on ownership without a certificate of exemption by February next year. This move aligns Ireland with Britain and Northern Ireland, prompted by a series of dog attacks, including the tragic death of Nicole Morey in Limerick earlier this year.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for stringent laws to protect the public from dangerous dog breeds.
