India and Malaysia aim to strengthen economic ties and defense cooperation, as highlighted during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to India, his first since assuming office in 2022. This visit signifies efforts to enhance bilateral relations amidst India’s border tensions with China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of deepening trade with Asian countries like Malaysia to counter Chinese influence in the region.
The leaders signed multiple agreements in areas such as digital technology, tourism, and traditional medicine. Discussions also focused on defense collaboration and expanding trade and investment, with a particular focus on semiconductor production. Both countries expressed a commitment to strengthening ties, with Anwar emphasizing the need for collaboration in construction, agriculture, and defense.
The visit included ceremonial events at India’s presidential palace and a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Bilateral trade between India and Malaysia stands at $20 billion, with both countries being significant trading partners for each other. The strong trade relations are exemplified by the presence of numerous Malaysian and Indian companies in each other’s markets.
