Ukraine’s top military commander, Aleksandr Syrsky, kept the details of a cross-border incursion into Russia under wraps to prevent cancellation and leaks. The Economist reported that Syrsky planned the attack on Russia’s Kursk Region without informing Western allies due to fears of interference or exposure.
With tensions rising in the Donbass region, Syrsky took a daring gamble to divert Russian forces and create bargaining chips for negotiation. He maintained secrecy by involving only a select group of officials and updating President Zelensky one-on-one. This decision left Western allies unaware of the operation.
The Economist revealed that despite previous Western interventions undermining Ukrainian operations, the attack on Russia proceeded without objections. While the US denied involvement, Russian officials claim NATO support emboldened Kiev. Ukrainian soldiers reported facing increased resistance and losses in the ongoing conflict.
Despite initial advances, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that Ukraine’s incursion has been halted, resulting in significant casualties for Ukrainian forces.
