Ensuring Transparency: Balochistan Struggles to Establish Information Commission
Despite the federal and provincial information commissions completing three terms, Balochistan is yet to form its own commission three years after the law was passed. The Right To Information Act was supposed to bring about transparency in the province but has not been fully implemented.
At the inaugural programme of the Right to Information project by Aid Balochistan, politicians, journalists, and activists emphasized the importance of citizens having access to information. They stressed that transparency in public fund usage can only be achieved through the enforcement of the RTI law.
Speakers highlighted the urgent need for information commissioners to be appointed on merit. They argued that the public’s rights can only be secured through the implementation of the RTI law, which will lead to proper utilization of government funds in remote areas of Balochistan.
Overall, easier access to information is seen as a key tool in eliminating corruption and improving accountability in the region.
