Deportation of 95 Libyans from South Africa

Ninety-five Libyans who were found at a suspected military camp in South Africa’s northeast are set to be deported back to their country. The Libyan men were detained on 26 July after a police raid on the training camp near White River, about 360 kilometers east of Johannesburg.

The group had entered South Africa in April on visas meant for security guard training, but were suspected of receiving military training instead. The government cancelled their visas, citing irregular acquisition based on misrepresentation in Tunis.

The deportation is scheduled to take place this morning from the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, with the Libyan government covering the cost of the flight. The group, initially charged with violating immigration rules, had their case dropped by the National Prosecuting Authority due to insufficient evidence.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber commended the officials for their efforts in the deportation process, emphasizing the importance of upholding immigration laws in the country.
