A group of lawmakers in the Russian State Duma is proposing a new bill to ban entry into Russia for families of migrants without Russian citizenship. The draft bill, put forward by members of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), aims to restrict the right for low-skilled foreign workers to bring their families to Russia, citing concerns over “an uncontrolled migration influx and social tension.”
LDPR leader, Leonid Slutsky, emphasized that families of migrant workers should stay in their home countries, alleging that they often form isolated communities and show disrespect to locals. The move comes amid a reported increase in migrant workers from Muslim-majority former Soviet republics, with Tajikistan accounting for the largest share of arrivals in 2023.
This legislative push follows State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin’s announcement to tighten immigration laws, signaling a broader focus on migration control and citizenship issues. The initiative gained momentum after a terrorist attack in Moscow involving gunmen from Tajikistan with expired immigration documents.
