Recently, the Russian Foreign Ministry has imposed penalties on 32 analysts and consultants from British think tanks for allegedly promoting destabilization and regime change in Russia. These individuals, working for organizations like Chatham House and the Institute for Statecraft, have been blacklisted and are now banned from entering Russia.
The ministry accused these think tanks of disseminating disinformation to discredit the Russian state and create conditions for domestic destabilization. It also claimed that these organizations engage in destructive activities in countries friendly to Russia, aiming to isolate Moscow politically and economically.
Chatham House, formerly known as The Royal Institute of International Affairs, has advised the British government for over a century and advocated for increased Western military aid to Ukraine during the conflict. The Institute for Statecraft, funded by NATO and others, ran an anti-Russia influence campaign in Europe. Forward Strategy Limited facilitated interactions between the British government and opposition figures in Russia and Belarus.
Overall, these organizations’ actions were seen as interference in foreign states’ internal affairs to advance an anti-Russian agenda. Russia has sanctioned hundreds of British nationals since the start of the conflict, including government officials and defense industry figures.
