HRW condemns Israeli airstrikes in Yemen as possible war crime
Human Rights Watch (HRW) criticized the Israeli airstrikes on Al Hudaydah Port in Yemen as a potential war crime, resulting in the deaths of six civilians and injuries to over 80 others. The attacks, which targeted oil storage tanks, shipping cranes, and a power plant, were deemed disproportionate and harmful to civilians by the rights group.
Niku Jafarnia, a researcher for HRW, expressed concern over the impact of the attacks on the already suffering Yemeni population, particularly those in Houthi-controlled territories. The port is vital for delivering food and aid to Yemen, with the majority of imports and humanitarian assistance passing through it.
HRW called on governments to cease providing arms to Israel, warning of complicity in war crimes. The group urged both Israel and the Houthis to halt unlawful attacks on civilians. The escalation of regional tensions, including Israel’s offensive on Gaza, has resulted in a significant loss of life and injuries.
