The Democrats have convened in Chicago to officially nominate US Vice President Kamala Harris as their new presidential candidate. However, the event was disrupted by pro-Palestine protesters who tore down a section of the metal security fence outside the venue of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) where US President Joe Biden was set to speak.
The protesters demanded that Biden cut military aid to Israel and pressure the Israeli government to end the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. They breached the fence and clashed with police officers, resulting in several arrests. This incident is part of a larger trend of protests by pro-Palestinian activists across the US since the war in Gaza began in October 2023.
The four-day event in Illinois will culminate in Harris’ official nomination as the Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Despite the disruption, the Democratic leadership is pushing forward with their agenda.
