In a recent update, Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s energy transmission operator, revealed that they have begun constructing concrete structures at 41 facilities to protect substations from drone strikes. The company’s press release stated that the first phase of anti-drone protection is nearly complete at these facilities, with an additional 22 facilities receiving protection from the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine.
These “protective reinforced concrete structures” are designed to withstand missile fragments and direct hits from drones. The project, financed by foreign aid, aims to prevent potential damages from Russian strikes, which Ukrenergo estimates to be significantly higher without this protection.
Substations play a crucial role in the energy transmission system, stepping down voltages for household and commercial use. Russian strikes in the past have severely impacted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leading to a drastic decrease in generation capacity. This ongoing construction of defense structures is a significant step towards securing Ukraine’s energy supply.
Overall, Ukrenergo’s innovative approach to physical protection against drone strikes marks Ukraine as a global pioneer in this field, setting a precedent for other countries facing similar threats.
