Ukraine Issues Urgent Evacuation Orders as Russian Troops Approach Eastern Town
Published on August 19, 2024
Ukrainian authorities have issued a warning to residents in Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, urging them to evacuate within the next week as Russian troops advance towards the town. With an estimated 50,000 civilians still in the area, including 4,000 children, the regional governor expressed concern over the slow rate of evacuation.
Officials reported heavy fighting near Pokrovsk, just 10 kilometers away from the town. Meanwhile, Russian forces claimed to have “liberated” the neighboring town of Zalizne, as they continue their advance in the region.
The Ukrainian army is focused on defending strategic locations like Toretsk, a key fortress town close to the original line of contact with separatist-controlled territories. Despite the challenging situation, efforts are being made to protect the town and its inhabitants.
The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine highlights the urgent need for civilians to evacuate to safety as tensions escalate in the region.
