Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Ukraine following an invitation from President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking the first visit by an Indian head of government in the history of bilateral relations. Modi will also make a stop in Poland during his trip.
This visit comes on the heels of Modi’s controversial trip to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, which drew criticism from Kyiv due to the close ties between India and Moscow. Despite India’s reluctance to openly condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, tensions have arisen over Indian citizens being sent to fight in Ukraine after signing up for ‘support jobs’ with the Russian military.
With Russia being a major supplier of arms and oil to India, the relationship between the two countries is complicated. However, the conflict in Ukraine has led to at least five Indian soldiers losing their lives, adding further strain to the situation.
Modi’s visit to Ukraine and Poland highlights the delicate balance India must maintain in navigating its relationships with both Russia and Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
