Indian medics continue protests over doctor’s murder

Thousands of junior doctors in India are continuing their protests following the tragic rape and murder of a fellow medic, which took place at a hospital in Kolkata. The doctors are demanding a safer workplace and a swift criminal investigation into the incident. Despite government appeals to return to work, the doctors remain steadfast in their protests, refusing to see non-emergency patients.

Women activists have pointed out that this incident underscores the ongoing issue of sexual violence against women in India, despite stricter laws implemented after the 2012 gang-rape case in New Delhi. The government has promised to set up a committee to suggest measures to improve the safety of healthcare professionals.

In a show of solidarity, supporters of West Bengal’s major soccer clubs marched in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim. Junior doctors in other states like Odisha, New Delhi, and Gujarat have also vowed to continue their protests until their demands are met.

The protests serve as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address and prevent gender-based violence in India, particularly within the healthcare sector.
