Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, is making headlines once again, this time for applying to become the Chancellor of Oxford University. Despite being in prison for over a year on what he claims are politically motivated charges, Khan submitted his application ahead of the deadline. The one-time cricket star, who studied at Oxford’s Keble College in 1972, is already an honorary fellow of the institution.
Candidates for the position will not be confirmed until early October, with voting taking place online on 28th October. The Chancellor’s role is largely ceremonial and is decided by graduates and academic staff. Notably, candidates cannot be current students, university employees, or seeking political office. The outgoing Chancellor, Christopher Patten, has held the position since 2003.
Imran Khan’s current imprisonment, stemming from allegations of improperly declaring the sale of state gifts, has been mired in controversy, with a UN panel labeling his detention as arbitrary. Despite facing new legal challenges, Khan’s bid for the position of Oxford Chancellor showcases his determination and ambition.
