Holomisa: Soldiers not the answer to fee syndicate.

Deputy Defence Minister Bantu Holomisa opposes military intervention as a solution to the extortion syndicate causing businesses to close in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. The syndicate targets businesses, especially those owned by foreigners, demanding “protection fees” leading to closures due to intimidation and threats.

The closure of Mthatha Ophthalmology Medical Practice was linked to criminal activities. The management cited threats to their safety as the reason for shutting down.

Holomisa criticized crime intelligence for not effectively addressing the issue of extortion. He highlighted the efforts of the new police minister in visiting hotspots to combat the criminal activities in Mthatha and Port Elizabeth.

The growing trend of businesses facing extortion in the Eastern Cape raises concerns about the safety and security of local businesses. It is essential for authorities to take swift action to protect businesses and prevent further closures due to criminal activities.
