The defending Cincinnati Open women’s singles champion, Coco Gauff of the U.S., was upset by Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 in the second round, ending her title defense.
Gauff admitted she made too many errors and allowed Putintseva to capitalize on them, acknowledging Putintseva’s unpredictable playing style. This win marked Putintseva’s first victory over Gauff in their head-to-head matches.
Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 3 seed, started her Cincinnati Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Sabalenka praised her own performance under pressure and is set to face Elina Svitolina in the next round.
Putintseva shared her belief in herself, instilled by her parents from a young age, which has fueled her success on the court. Her next challenge will be against Paula Badosa in the Round of 16.
