Chrystul Kizer sentenced to 11 years for killing abuser

In a high-profile case that sparked debate on the treatment of sex trafficking victims, 24-year-old Chrystul Kizer from Milwaukee has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing Randall Volar, who prosecutors said had sexually abused her since she was a teenager. Despite evidence of Volar’s abuse towards Kizer and other underage black girls, authorities failed to take action, leading Kizer to take matters into her own hands.

Claiming self-defense, Kizer shot Volar in 2018 and set fire to his house before fleeing in his car. Her case raised questions about the leniency afforded to victims of sex trafficking in the justice system. Ultimately, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that evidence of abuse could be used as a defense in Kizer’s case.
