50 Years of Diplomatic Relations Between Brazil and China
In the first half of 2024, Brazil exported US$ 28.44 billion in agricultural products to China, including soybeans, corn, sugar, beef, chicken, cellulose, cotton, and fresh pork.
China and Brazil recently observed fifty years of diplomatic ties, paving the way for Beijing to emerge as Latin America’s primary trading partner. The bilateral relationship is centered around the China-Brazil High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Commission (COSBAN), established in 2004 and upgraded to a global strategic partnership in 2012. The year 2024 also marks the 20th anniversary of COSBAN’s creation.
China remains the top destination for Brazilian agribusiness exports, with soybeans, corn, sugar, beef, and more being key products. A recent boost in exports was facilitated by China’s approval of 38 new Brazilian meatpacking plants, expanding the trade relations further. Brazil is also taking steps to promote Brazilian coffee in China, showcasing the mutual benefits of the partnership.
Despite being part of the BRICS group, Brazil has been cautious about signing a trade agreement with China, concerned about the impact on its industrial sector. However, the ongoing dialogue and strong trade relations reflect the growing ties between the two nations.
