Recently, Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s transitional government, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting over one million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. These refugees have been in Bangladesh since 2017, fleeing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
Yunus highlighted the importance of international support for sustaining humanitarian efforts and facilitating the safe return of the Rohingya to Myanmar. Despite challenges, including overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar and relocations to Bhasan Char island, the government remains dedicated to assisting the Rohingya community.
During a briefing with foreign diplomats, Yunus emphasized the need for continued international assistance for both humanitarian operations and the dignified repatriation process. He also stressed the priority of restoring law and order in the region.
The transitional government, formed after civil unrest and anti-government protests, is navigating a transition to a new democratic future. With hopes for support from the international community, Yunus remains focused on the well-being and safe return of the Rohingya refugees.
