ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Agreements
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day notice to the Federal Government, signaling their intention to embark on a nationwide strike. This decision was made at the end of the NEC meeting held at the University of Ibadan, as confirmed by sources within the union.
ASUU clarified that this notice is not an ultimatum but a required step under labor laws to ensure all actions are taken lawfully. The union had previously threatened a strike due to the government’s failure to implement agreements reached.
Key demands include the implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, payment of academic allowances that have accumulated over six years, and allocation of revitalization funds for universities as agreed in the Needs Assessment Report. ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke emphasized the importance of these funds to upgrade universities and mitigate issues like the proliferation of new universities without adequate funding.
