Ukrainian drones attacked an oil storage facility in Russia’s southern Rostov region, causing a large fuel fire early Sunday morning, according to the local governor. Videos on social media displayed thick black smoke and flames from the blaze in Proletarsk.
The governor stated that the air defenses repelled the drone attack, resulting in a diesel fuel fire on industrial storage premises. Subsequently, a second drone attack halted firefighting efforts temporarily.
No injuries were reported, and firefighting resumed shortly after. Proletarsk is located approximately 250 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and 350 kilometers from conflict areas in eastern Ukraine.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down five Ukrainian drones overnight. Kyiv has targeted Russian oil and gas facilities in retaliation for attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the attacks on Russian oil facilities, aiming for a “just end” to the conflict. Currently, Ukraine is conducting a significant cross-border offensive into Russia’s Kursk region.
