Ukraine moves closer to integrating with the West

Ukraine celebrated a significant milestone on June 25 with the initiation of accession negotiations with the European Union. The EU expressed a strong commitment to advancing the enlargement process based on Ukraine’s implementation of anti-corruption reforms. Over the past decade, Ukraine has made notable progress in improving its governance, reflected in its rise from 144th to 104th place on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index.

To meet EU standards, Ukraine must focus on key areas such as the rule of law, public administration reform, protection of minority rights, and democratic institution functionality. Efforts are already underway, with the Ukrainian government implementing strategies for public administration reform and e-governance, albeit facing challenges in judiciary reform.

Civil society organizations are actively engaged in advocating for reform and holding the government accountable. As Ukraine strives towards European integration, continuous progress and cooperation with EU recommendations are essential. The journey may be challenging, but the potential benefits in terms of socio-economic opportunities and living standards make it a worthwhile endeavor.
