A recent incident in Turkey’s parliament turned violent when an opposition deputy was attacked for advocating the admission of a colleague, imprisoned for anti-government activities but now an elected member. Video footage captured members of the ruling AKP party physically assaulting Ahmet Sik, leading to chaos in the assembly.
The targeted colleague, Can Atalay, was sentenced in 2022 for allegedly inciting protests in 2013 and later elected to parliament. Despite attempts to strip him of his seat, the Constitutional Court intervened in his favor.
The incident led to calls for Atalay’s release and highlighted the existing political tension in Turkey’s parliament. This altercation is not the first of its kind, indicating underlying discord within the legislative body.
