Thai King names Paetongtarn Shinawatra as new PM.

Paeoongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was appointed as Thailand’s new Prime Minister. In a ceremony held at the headquarters of a pro-Thaksin TV station, she received the official written command from King Maha Vajiralongkorn to form a coalition government led by her Pheu Thai party.

Despite her lack of experience, Paeoongtarn is ready to tackle the challenges ahead, including improving the quality of life for all Thais. She takes over from Srettha Thavisin, who was dismissed by the Constitutional Court for ethics violations.

The political landscape in Thailand has long been dominated by the rivalry between Thaksin and his allies and the pro-military, pro-royalist elite. Pheu Thai’s unexpected defeat in the previous election led to the coalition government led by Paeoongtarn.

As she assumes office, all eyes will be on Paeoongtarn to see how she navigates the influence of her controversial father and revitalizes the economy in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
