The Sudanese government plans to send a delegation to Cairo for discussions with US and Egyptian officials. They are deliberating their participation in peace talks aimed at ending a 16-month war that has ravaged the country. The government, which is in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), is reluctant to attend the talks in Switzerland until a previous agreement struck in Jeddah is implemented.
Initiated by the US, the talks aim to cease the devastating war that started in April 2023 and address the humanitarian crisis affecting half of Sudan’s 50 million population. The ruling Transitional Sovereign Council’s decision to go to Cairo followed negotiations with the US special envoy and the Egyptian government, limited to discussions on implementing the Jeddah agreement.
The army, in a standoff with the RSF, is also concerned about the alleged support of the RSF by the United Arab Emirates. In a promising move, the army recently permitted an RSF-controlled border crossing into Darfur for aid deliveries, following discussions with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
