Shinawatra heiress officially named as new Thai PM by royal decree

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra, was appointed as Thailand’s new prime minister, succeeding her predecessor who was removed by a court order.

As a member of the Pheu Thai Party, she leads a coalition government that includes military parties involved in past coups against her family members who also held the prime minister role.

Paetongtarn is the third Shinawatra to become prime minister and is the youngest at 37, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve and promising a transformative leadership focused on empowering the Thai people.

Her appointment follows the removal of the previous prime minister due to an ethical breach, marking a significant political shift in Thai governance.

Thaksin, her influential father, played a key role in her political journey and the formation of the coalition government, which aims to address the deep political divisions in the country.

Despite facing legal challenges, the Shinawatra family remains a central figure in Thai politics, advocating for progressive policies and social reforms.
