Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent interview with TIME Magazine has come under scrutiny as TIME reported several false statements made by the PM. Contrary to Netanyahu’s claims about Israel’s financial support for Hamas, previous governments did indeed provide funding to the Gaza Strip, including a reported $30 million monthly transfer in 2014.
Funding Hamas
Netanyahu’s government also delivered funds to Hamas in suitcases when Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sanctioned the group in 2018. The flow of Qatari funds to Hamas continued until it was halted by former PM Naftali Bennett in 2021.
Supporting Hamas
Though Netanyahu denied expressing support for Hamas, past statements suggest otherwise. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich even referred to Hamas as an asset compared to the burden of the Palestinian Authority.
Netanyahu’s assessment of the Hamas threat
Netanyahu’s assessment of the Hamas threat has also faced criticism, with contradictory statements about deterrence and containment. This raises questions about the PM’s handling of security issues and priorities.
