A recent survey conducted by the Smith Institute has revealed that two-thirds of the Israeli public supports state recognition of non-Orthodox marriages performed in Israel. The survey, commissioned by Hiddush – for Religious Freedom and Equality, showed widespread support for this issue across various political and religious demographics in Israel.
The study also examined attitudes towards “Utah marriages,” where couples can marry online in the US without leaving Israel. Surprisingly, 69% of Israeli Jews were unaware of this option, yet two-thirds supported it when informed. The survey highlighted a shift in preferences for marriage types among Israeli Jews, with only 50% choosing Orthodox weddings for their children.
CEO Rabbi Uri Regev of Hiddush emphasized the need to promote freedom of choice in marriage and divorce, criticizing the Orthodox Rabbinate’s monopoly on marriage ceremonies. He called for political parties to uphold the principles of freedom of religion and conscience in the upcoming elections.
This survey showcases a growing trend towards more inclusive marriage practices in Israel, reflecting a desire for greater freedom and equality in matters of personal belief and tradition.
