Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim revealed that 22 individuals have succumbed to the disease, with 354 confirmed cases reported in recent weeks.
Cholera, a highly contagious infection causing severe dehydration and diarrhea, has already claimed 78 lives in Sudan this year, with over 2400 cases reported between January and July, as per the World Health Organization.
The cholera outbreak is the latest tragedy to hit Sudan, worsening conditions in a country already grappling with conflict-induced displacement and food shortages.
The country’s conflict has triggered the largest displacement crisis globally, affecting over 10.7 million people, with more than 2 million seeking refuge in neighboring nations.
While cholera outbreaks have occurred in Sudan previously, the current situation demands urgent vaccination campaigns to contain the spread.
