Recent advisories from Japan’s weather agency about potential megaquakes have increased public awareness and preparedness for natural disasters, especially earthquakes. Surveys indicate that after the advisory, 74.8 percent of respondents in high-risk areas believed a quake could strike their towns, while overall recognition of the advisory was at 83.0 percent in designated prefectures.
Following a magnitude 7.1 quake in Miyazaki Prefecture, the government issued a weeklong alert for increased preparedness, which was later withdrawn. A survey conducted by the University of Tokyo and another by marketing firm Intage Inc. showed that more people are now taking steps to prepare for disasters, with a 38.0 percent increase in average spending on disaster preparedness.
With respondents indicating readiness and proactive measures to protect themselves and their families, it is evident that the recent earthquake events have spurred a greater sense of urgency and consciousness about disaster preparedness among the Japanese population.
