Iraq calls in UK diplomat over remarks ‘misrepresenting’ nation

Relations between Iraq and the UK have been strained after the British Ambassador to Iraq, Stephen Hitchen, made comments on the state of security in the country. Hitchen’s remarks on incorporating the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) into the government sparked controversy, leading Iraq to summon the British charge d’affaires.

The Iraqi government criticized Hitchen for painting a “bleak image” of the country and accused him of interference in political affairs. The PMF, formed in response to ISIS, includes armed groups backed by Iran with a history of human rights abuses and violence.

Hitchen highlighted the security challenges in Iraq, stating they hindered British companies’ operations. He emphasized the need for a secure environment for investments, contrasting chaotic settings where companies may flourish with bribes and threats.

As tensions escalate between the UK and Iraq, Hitchen’s comments have sparked debate on the role of militias, foreign interests, and the future of security in the country.
