An Iranian Court Begins Trial Over 1953 US-led Coup
An Iranian court has initiated a historical trial against the US administration and its officials regarding the 1953 coup orchestrated against Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh’s democratically-elected government. The trial, held on the 71st anniversary of the coup, showcased 402,000 Iranians suing six American individuals and organizations for their involvement in overthrowing Mosaddegh and solidifying Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s rule until the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The attorney of the defendants, Shami Aghdam, presented evidence indicating that the CIA and MI6 colluded to orchestrate the coup against Iran’s legitimate government. The lawsuit highlights how the US and UK violated international principles and unlawfully interfered in Iran’s internal affairs to maintain power and exploit the country’s resources.
