Justice For the Fallen Doctor: Indian Junior Doctors Demand Action
Despite the end of a 24-hour strike called by the biggest association of doctors in India, junior doctors in many hospitals remained off the job on Sunday to demand swift justice for a colleague who was raped and murdered. The 31-year old postgraduate student of chest medicine was killed in the early hours of August 9 in Kolkata, sparking protests, candlelight marches, and a refusal to see non-emergency patients by doctors nationwide.
Advocates for women’s rights emphasize the ongoing struggle women face in India, despite the implementation of tougher laws following the 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder case. The father of the victim expressed solidarity with the protesting doctors, stating that their actions have given him strength.
The Indian Medical Association has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and enhance security protocols in hospitals to protect healthcare professionals. While most doctors have returned to work, some are continuing a nationwide cease-work until thorough inquiries are made and arrests are carried out.
