The National Assembly Speaker has agreed to debate Eskom’s proposed 36% electricity tariff increase, as requested by the DA. The DA spokesperson has expressed concerns about the potential impact on South Africans if the increase is approved. Municipalities have joined the objection to Eskom’s tariff hike, and a petition has been launched to gather support for rejecting the proposal.
Last week, the DA’s mayoral caucus wrote to the regulator expressing their disapproval of the proposed increase. The debate will focus on the legality of Eskom’s additional tariff and Nersa’s decision to allow the recovery of extra funds from consumers. If implemented, the increase could burden South African households already facing financial challenges.
The DA remains committed to fighting against high electricity bills and protecting consumers. With municipalities also opposing the hike, the party aims to collect 50,000 signatures on the petition to further reject the increase.
