Colombia Halts Coal Exports to Israel – Decree
Sputnik International
MOSCOW, August 18 – Colombia has suspended coal exports to Israel, according to a decree issued by President Gustavo Petro. The decision follows a plan outlined in June to halt all coal shipments to Israel.
In 2023, Colombia supplied 60% of Israel’s coal needs, making up 22% of the country’s power grid demands. This move comes after Colombia cut diplomatic ties with Israel on May 2, with President Petro condemning Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide.
Furthermore, in March, Colombia decided to suspend all arms purchases from Israel, showing solidarity with Palestinian movement Hamas. The decision was made following a joint statement by 18 nations urging Hamas to release hostages to achieve peace.
On October 7, 2023, Israel faced a significant attack from Gaza, leading to a high death toll. The Israel Defense Forces responded with Operation Iron Swords, including a complete blockade of Gaza.
