A witch hunt is taking place in America ahead of the presidential election, as claimed by Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov. He stated that freedom of speech in the US is only allowed for those who express pro-American views, while dissenters are facing a “political inquisition.” Antonov highlighted the FBI search at the home of Russian-born US political analyst Dimitri Simes, a critic of President Joe Biden’s administration.
The ambassador compared the situation to the dark times of McCarthyism in the 1950s, where suspected communists were targeted. Antonov criticized the US for double standards concerning democracy and freedom of speech, pointing out the hypocrisy in overlooking First Amendment rights at home while lecturing the world on democratic values.
Simes, a naturalized US citizen and a former aide to President Richard Nixon, was among those investigated during Russiagate. The recent searches at his property and the home of Scott Ritter, a journalist and former UN inspector, suggest US authorities are concerned about connections to Russian media outlets.
