UN Ready to Deliver Aid into War-Torn Darfur Region

The United Nations has announced its readiness to deliver food into western Sudan’s conflict-ridden Darfur region after the reopening of the key border crossing with Chad. The closure of the Adre crossing had hindered humanitarian organizations in providing essential supplies to Darfur amid the ongoing conflict.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 25 million people facing acute hunger. Famine has already been declared in a displacement camp in Darfur. The World Food Programme is racing against time to save lives by delivering vital aid through the reopened Adre crossing and other border crossings in Sudan.

As talks continue in Switzerland to broker a ceasefire and enhance humanitarian access, the importance of opening vital crossings for aid delivery cannot be overstated. With hundreds of thousands facing catastrophic hunger, urgent action is needed to prevent further suffering in Sudan.
