SSOMA-LC rejects Kiir’s Tumaini Initiative invite; Rome talks fail.

Welcome to the Latest Updates on Peace Talks in South Sudan

A recent three-day meeting in Rome between the Government of South Sudan and the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) led by Gen. Thomas Cirillo has brought some significant developments to light. The opposition alliance, comprising of various groups, has unequivocally rejected an invitation to join the Kenyan-mediated Nairobi Peace Talks known as the Tumaini Initiative.

Following the meeting, a new structure called the SSOMA Leadership Council (SSOMA-LC) was announced, with Gen. Cirillo as chairperson, Dr. Yata as deputy chairperson, and Amb. Ajawin as secretary general. The group cited safety concerns and lack of response to their request to conduct talks in Rome as reasons for declining the invitation to the Tumaini Initiative.

Despite President Salva Kiir’s invitation delivered by Ambassador Albino Mathon Aboug, SSOMA remains steadfast in its opposition to the R-ARCSS agreement. The rejection of the Tumaini Peace Initiative by SSOMA emphasizes the ongoing challenges facing peace efforts in South Sudan.
