Sri Lanka’s Intense Presidential Election

The upcoming presidential election in Sri Lanka is heating up as prominent candidates hit the campaign trail, planning to hold up to 100 rallies each across the country.

Key candidates like Premadasa and Ranil have already launched their campaigns, with Premadasa focusing on holding 60 big rallies and visiting Tamil-dominated areas to seek support. Ranil, on the other hand, is emphasizing continuing reforms and reducing the burden on people by explaining his negotiations with the IMF.

The youngest candidate, Namal, is also gearing up for the intense contest by planning to hold about 100 rallies after launching his campaign. The race is made more interesting by the promises of change from candidates like Sajith and Dissanayake, leading to a four-cornered contest within the majority Sinhala Buddhist community.

Expert Prof Ramu Manivannan notes the surprising polarisation within the community and the Rajapaksa family’s enduring power politics. With the divisive mandate looming, the dynamics of the election in Sri Lanka are sure to be intriguing.
