Russian authorities recently added close allies of the late activist Alexei Navalny to the government’s list of “extremists and terrorists.” Among those included were Navalny’s former spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, and head of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Maria Pevchikh. This move also targeted Navalny’s exiled lawyers and associates, such as Dmitry Nizovtsev and Nina Volokhonskaya.
Individuals like journalists Antonina Favorskaya and Olga Komleva, and activist Alexei Malyarevsky, currently imprisoned in Russia, also face “extremism” charges for their connections with Navalny. The listing enables Rosfinmonitoring to freeze their bank accounts without a court order.
Navalny’s associates were added to the list six months after his death, following the ban on his political and activist groups as “extremist” organizations. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, criticized Russian authorities for neglecting to investigate her husband’s death properly. These actions exemplify ongoing efforts to suppress independent journalism in Russia.
