Outbreak of Mpox: New Strain Surfaces in Pakistan
The Pakistani health ministry confirmed a case of mpox, revealing that the affected individual had recently traveled from a Gulf country. This announcement comes on the heels of Sweden reporting the first infection outside of Africa involving a more dangerous strain of the virus that has caused widespread fatalities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
With cases of mpox spreading across Africa and reaching countries like Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency. The new Clade 1b subclade strain has caused alarm due to its severity and rapid transmission.
Sweden’s Public Health Agency identified the new strain in an individual who had visited a region in Africa with a major mpox outbreak. The confirmed case in Pakistan involves a 34-year-old man, with officials awaiting genetic sequencing results to determine the specific strain. The WHO cautioned that more imported cases of the new strain were likely in Europe.
As countries take measures to screen individuals and goods for mpox, the focus remains on vaccination and containment strategies. With the global interconnectedness emphasized by these recent cases, international cooperation and proactive responses are key in tackling the mpox outbreak.
