Karnataka Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao

In a recent development, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao has announced an amendment to the law, aimed at providing protection to doctors, nurses, and medical staff. This move comes in response to the growing concerns over the safety of healthcare workers, especially in light of a recent incident in Kolkata involving a medical student.

Under the proposed amendment, any form of abuse or insult towards medical professionals will be considered a criminal offense. Additionally, posting videos or any form of defamation on social media will also be punishable under this law. Minister Rao emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe working environment for healthcare workers and urged hospital owners to take responsibility for the safety of their employees.

To address these issues further, Minister Rao has called for a meeting with doctors and hospital owners to discuss safety measures. Despite the upcoming protest by doctors, emergency services will remain available in all hospitals, with only the Outpatient Department (OPD) being temporarily closed. The minister acknowledged the grievances of healthcare workers and emphasized the importance of creating a conducive and safe workplace environment.
