Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Health Dr Malik Mukhtar Ahmad announced the government’s comprehensive strategy to protect people from mpox, formerly known as monkeypox. The disease, although usually mild, can be fatal in rare cases and spreads through close contact, causing flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions on the body.
The World Health Organisation declared the recent outbreak a global health emergency after the identification of a new variant of the virus that appears to spread more easily through routine contact. Pakistan and other countries are on high alert, with enhanced monitoring and surveillance measures in place at airports and entry points.
During a press conference in Islamabad, Dr Ahmad reassured the public about the situation, stating that only one case had been reported in Pakistan. Diagnostic laboratories are operational across provinces, and monitoring is intensified for travelers from at-risk regions.
Dr Ahmad urged individuals with a travel history or symptoms to isolate at home, seek medical advice, and avoid close contact to prevent the spread of mpox.
