Social Media Giant X Shuts Down Operations in Brazil Amid Legal Battle
Social media platform says shutdown ‘effective immediately’ but Brazilian users will still have access to X.
Social media giant X has announced the closure of its operations in Brazil following a legal dispute with Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes over the platform’s role in combating disinformation.
The platform, previously known as Twitter, stated that the shutdown would take effect immediately but assured Brazilian users that they would still be able to access X. This decision was met with disappointment from the company, placing the responsibility for the closure solely on Judge Moraes.
The legal battle stemmed from Moraes’ efforts to combat the spread of false information online, particularly related to the country’s political landscape. This included a previous order to block accounts spreading misinformation, which led to tensions between the judge and Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X.
Musk criticized Moraes, calling him “an utter disgrace to justice,” in response to the closure of X in Brazil. Despite the challenges faced, Musk and X representatives have agreed to comply with legal rulings and address operational faults within the platform.
