Canada has stood firm in its commitment to safeguard temporary foreign workers amidst criticism from a recent UN report. The Minister of Employment emphasized the joint responsibility of employers and the federal government in ensuring the safety and well-being of foreign workers under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP).
The minister’s office reiterated that employers hiring temporary foreign workers must prioritize their health and safety throughout their employment, with the government ensuring program compliance and holding violators accountable. This response follows the UN report labeling Canada’s TFWP as a potential breeding ground for modern slavery and criticizing its treatment of vulnerable workers.
Highlighting progress in monitoring and enforcement, the statement revealed over 2,000 inspections conducted last fiscal year, resulting in a 36% increase in fines and a higher number of program bans. Additionally, heightened oversight measures were introduced to enhance the program’s integrity and protect foreign workers.
Continuing its dedication to strengthening the TFWP, the Government of Canada is exploring increased fees and regulatory changes to support additional integrity measures. Collaboration with stakeholders remains essential to enhance protections for temporary foreign workers in the country.
