The brawl was sparked by a call for jailed opposition deputy Can Atalay to be allowed in the assembly. Atalay, accused of organizing anti-government protests, was recently elected as an MP.
The altercation was caught on video, showing AKP party members attacking Ahmet Sik, leading to a melee with blood splattered across the speaker’s podium. Atalay, sentenced to 18 years in 2022 for allegedly trying to overthrow the government, denies the charges.

Despite Atalay’s election and subsequent exclusion from parliament, opposition members continue to advocate for his release and reinstatement. The conflict reached a peak during the session, resulting in reprimands for both sides.
