Commemoration of Anti-Regime Protests in Southern Syria

Hundreds of protestors gathered in southern Syria to mark the first anniversary of anti-regime protests against the Bashar al-Assad government. Demonstrators in As-Suwayda carried flags of the Free Syrian Army and the Druze community, advocating for peace, freedom, and social justice.

The protests in As-Suwayda first began in 2023 following a fuel price hike announcement by the regime, triggering widespread anger and demonstrations. In response to economic grievances, residents shut down businesses and established roadblocks to Damascus.

Despite attempts by the Assad regime to suppress the protests, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri emphasized the determination of the demonstrators to continue their peaceful resistance. Clashes between the military and local armed groups continue to occur sporadically in As-Suwayda.
