US seeks concrete outcomes at Sudan truce talks despite army absence

The Battle for Peace: US Envoy Pushes for Resolution in Sudan War

The war in Sudan has been ongoing for over a year, with calls from activists for the warring factions to reach a ceasefire agreement. The conflict, which began in April 2023, pits the Sudanese army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). US special envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, is leading talks to end the devastating war, even as the Sudanese government has opted out.

Despite the absence of the Sudanese armed forces, the RSF delegation is participating in the US-brokered negotiations in Switzerland. Perriello emphasized the need for “tangible results” and expressed determination to work with international partners to achieve a ceasefire and save lives.

The talks, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, aim to secure a ceasefire, improve humanitarian access, and establish enforcement mechanisms. However, the Sudanese government remains defiant, rejecting the talks as an imposition and refusing to negotiate with the RSF.

The conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, with more than half of the population facing acute hunger and widespread displacement. With tens of thousands dead, the push for peace in Sudan remains critical for the region’s stability and the well-being of its people.
