The United States has approved the sale of 600 Patriot air defense missiles to Germany at a cost of $5 billion (€4.6 billion). The Pentagon stated that this deal will enhance the security of a NATO ally and support Germany’s national defense goals. The State Department has given its approval, with Congress still needing to finalize the agreement.
What is the Patriot air defense system?
The Patriot system can engage enemy aircraft and missiles up to 100 kilometers away and 30 kilometers high. Germany had 36 systems during the Cold War, but now only has nine. Other European countries like Greece, the Netherlands, and Poland also possess Patriot systems.
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany donated three systems to Ukraine in early 2022. This sale will strengthen Germany’s defense capabilities and improve interoperability with US and NATO forces, playing a significant role in maintaining political and economic stability in Europe.
